Last year for my birthday I asked for a copy of Holly Whitaker’s Quit Like a Woman to help guide me through Dry January. I didn’t finish the book OR the month, but let me rewind.

I come from a family of addicts. My grandfather. My father. A few of my uncles.

My grandfather went to AA religiously. After his death, I came to find out that he sponsored many men in his AA chapter. He was respected in that circle. Today I carry his Matt Talbot coin with me everywhere I go, and I keep a copy of his AA book on my bookshelves, tucked safely between some antique…
